Chechnya-Ingushetia

Chechen-Ingushetia SSR — an autonomous republic in the Soviet Union, 1936-1944 and 1957-1992. The administrative center was the city of Grozny.

By 1921, these territories were already included in the Mountain SSR. In 1936, with the new constitution adopted in the Soviet Union, these territories were declared an autonomous republic, which was included in the Russian Soviet Republic. During the Second World War, certain territories of the Autonomous Republic of Chechnya-Ingushetia were controlled by the Germans. During different periods, the territories of the autonomous republic were joined to the bordering republics or autonomies, in 1944, the mountainous areas of the Caucasus, Akhalkhevi district, became part of the Georgian SSR, this territory returned to Chechnya-Ingushetia in 1957.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Chechnya and Ingushetia were declared federal republics within Russia.
