Dagestan, officially the Republic of Dagestan (Russian: Респу́блика Дагеста́н) is a subject of the Russian Federation, included in the North Caucasus Federal District.[3]
The capital is the city of Mahachkala.
The main territory borders Azerbaijan in the south, Georgia in the southwest, Chechnya in the west, the Stavropol side in the northwest, and the Republic of Kalmykia in the north.
It was created on January 20, 1921.
