Shavsheti

The settlement was named after Shavsheti, which was its former center. It was inhabited since the Bronze Age. From the 9th century onwards, new buildings of Georgians from the east appeared here, the construction of churches and monasteries started. The Episcopate of Tbet was founded in the 10th century. In 1547, Shavsheti was captured by the Ottoman Empire, and as a result of the 1877-1878 war, it was occupied by the Russian Empire. In 1921, it was transferred to Turkey by the Treaty of Kars. It is currently included in Artvin province of Turkey as Shavshati district.
